The homeowner on Burncoat Street hadn’t had the chimney swept in six years. We found Class III glazed creosote - that’s the hard, tar-like buildup that can’t be removed with a standard wire brush. We applied ACS anti-creosote treatment, waited the required dwell time, then used mechanical rotary cleaning with a custom-fitted chain whip to break the glaze. The flue liner was fully exposed, the draft reading quadrupled, and the customer received Clause 4 photo documentation showing the before, during, and after states.
Smoke Chamber Parging - Grafton Hill
This Grafton Hill fireplace was sending smoke into the living room on windy days. The smoke chamber - the area above the damper that funnels smoke into the flue - had eroded mortar and gaps large enough to slide a pencil into. That’s a code violation and a fire hazard, since heat can reach combustible framing. We applied HeatShield Cerfractory Foam, a refractory material rated to 3,000°F, rebuilding the proper funnel geometry. The smoke spillage stopped immediately. Stainless Steel Liner Installation - Tatnuck
The Tatnuck homeowner called after a home inspector flagged the chimney during a sale. Our NFPA 211 Level 2 camera scan showed cracked terra cotta and a significant offset - combustion gases were leaking into the masonry cavity. We installed a DuraFlex 316Ti stainless steel liner, sized correctly for the fireplace insert, with proper insulation to maintain flue temperature and reduce creosote formation. The installation passed municipal inspection on first review. The buyer and seller both received the Clause 4 photo record and a copy of the written warranty.
Chimney Cap and Crown Rebuild - Indian Lake East
The Indian Lake East chimney had no cap and a crown that was shedding concrete onto the roof. Water was entering the flue, accelerating deterioration of the terra cotta liner below. We formed and poured a new concrete crown with proper slope and a 2-inch drip edge to direct water away from the masonry. A Gelco stainless steel cap with 5/8-inch mesh keeps animals and debris out while allowing proper draft. The materials came through Haven’s buying network - DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield - so the price stayed honest.
Fireplace Smoke Stain Elimination - Main South
This Main South fireplace had been staining the brick and mantel for two winters. The previous owner had just painted over it. We found an oversized firebox with a throat damper that only opened to 60% of the flue area - the fire was choking on its own exhaust. We swept the flue, adjusted the damper mechanism to full opening, and applied a smoke stain remover to the brick and painted surfaces. The fix was mechanical, not cosmetic. Written price before work: $340 for sweep, adjustment, and surface cleaning.
Annual Maintenance Sweep - Shrewsbury Street Corridor
The Shrewsbury Street homeowner burns four cords of seasoned hardwood each winter and books us every September. This is what prevention looks like: 1/8-inch of soot, no glaze, no surprises.
