DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up, and look for warping, cracks, or heavy rust scaling. Note the handle operation - smooth, sticky, or loose. That’s useful information, and you’re not risking anything.

Where DIY goes wrong: the damper frame is mortared into the smoke chamber throat, and removing it without disturbing surrounding brick takes specific tools and patience. More importantly, the smoke chamber above the damper is often coated with Class III creosote, which is highly flammable and carcinogenic. Disturbing it without proper containment and PPE creates a fire hazard and a health hazard. The plate itself weighs 15-30 pounds depending on size; dropping it into the firebox can crack the firebrick.
