Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactured chimney crowns, caps, and termination components from the 1970s through the early 2000s under several product lines. The most common in Worcester are the CC-series cast crowns (CC-8, CC-10, CC-12, denoting flue diameter in inches) and the older bolt-down metal crown assemblies found on pre-1990 prefab fireplaces.

To identify your unit: check the stamped model tag on the cap’s underside or the crown’s leading edge. If the tag is gone, measure the flue opening and note whether your crown is cast concrete, galvanized steel, or the Famco “Perma-Crown” composite used from 1985-1998. The Perma-Crown series is the one we see fail most predictably - the fiberglass binder breaks down after 15-20 Worcester freeze-thaw cycles, especially on south-facing exposures.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks spiderwebbing across the crown surface. These open during Worcester’s freeze-thaw cycles, usually by late January after the first dozen hard freezes. Water enters, expands, and the cracks widen exponentially. We photograph these with the camera zoom during our Level 2 inspection so you can see the progression year over year.
• Concrete fragments or grit in the firebox or on the roof. This means the crown is spalling - surface layers detaching from the rebar or wire mesh core. Once spalling starts, the crown loses structural integrity fast. We’ve found pieces as large as a fist on Main South roofs after nor’easters.

• The crown has pulled away from the flue tile, leaving a visible gap. This is the most expensive failure mode if ignored. Gaps allow water into the chimney interior, where it degrades the liner and smoke chamber. Safe to check yourself: Binocular inspection from the ground for cracks, rust stains, or missing pieces. Check the firebox after rain for water entry. These observations help us when you call.

Don’t attempt: Crown work requires working at height on a sloped or flat roof, often near the edge, with wet materials and tools. The concrete pour itself demands proper forming, reinforcement placement, and slope geometry (minimum 3/4 inch per foot) to shed water.
